    Iron microparticles were fired onto a capacitor-type microparticle detector which responded to an impact with a spark discharge. Ion currents were extracted from the spark and analyzed in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The mass spectra showed the element of both detector and particle materials. The total extracted ion currents was typically 10A within a period of 100ns, indicating very efficient vaporization of the particle and ionization of the vapor. Potential applications include research on cosmic dust, atmospheric aerosols and cloud droplets, particles ejected by rocket or jet engines, by machining processes, or by nuclear bomb explosions

    Thermal Modeling in Polymer Extrusion

    In this paper we consider thermal effects of polymer flows through a cylindrical die. First, we derive a model for the oscillatory behavior of polymer flow in an extruder given a functional relation between the pressure and flow rate. A simple isothermal but temperature dependent model is constructed to find this relation. Unfortunately, the model is shown to be invalid in the physical regime of interest. We present several arguments to suggest that the isothermal assumption is reasonable but that a more detailed understanding of the small-scale molecular dynamics near the boundary may be required. Second, we show that a simplified model for thermoflow multiplicity in a cooled tube is inconsistent, when the stationary non-Newtonian flow is assumed to be incompressible without radial pressure gradients and without radial velocity. This inconsistency can be removed by allowing for weak compressibility effects in the down-steam area

    Effective potential for Polyakov loops from a center symmetric effective theory in three dimensions

    We present lattice simulations of a center symmetric dimensionally reduced effective field theory for SU(2) Yang Mills which employ thermal Wilson lines and three-dimensional magnetic fields as fundamental degrees of freedom. The action is composed of a gauge invariant kinetic term, spatial gauge fields and a potential for the Wilson line which includes a "fuzzy" bag term to generate non-perturbative fluctuations. The effective potential for the Polyakov loop is extracted from the simulations including all modes of the loop as well as for cooled configuration where the hard modes have been averaged out. The former is found to exhibit a non-analytic contribution while the latter can be described by a mean-field like ansatz with quadratic and quartic terms, plus a Vandermonde potential which depends upon the location within the phase diagram.Comment: 10 pages, 22 figures, v2: published version (minor clarifications, update of reference list

    Primarily from the Pioneer 8 and 9 results, it is concluded that the flux of picogram sized dust particles near the earth's orbit has been constant to within the observational limits over three years of observation. In particular, since dust streams are not observed, they cannot explain microphone detected events. However, the possibility of rare events due to dust blown directly off a cometary nucleus (such as that reported for Comet Bennett) cannot be completely ruled out
